Namibia and United States Sign US$304.5 Million Grant for Poverty Reduction through Economic Growth Windhoek, Namibia
At a signing ceremony on Monday, July 28, 2008, in the Office of the Prime Minister, Prof. Peter Katjavivi, Director General of the National Planning Commission (NPC) and Mr. Rodney Bent, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a US Government Agency, signed a US$304.5 million (more than N$2.3 billion) grant agreement - the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Namibia Compact.
The signing was witnessed by the Right Hon. Nahas Angula, Prime Minister of Namibia, H.E. Dennise Mathieu, United States Ambassador to Namibia, and a number of Namibian and US officials and stakeholders. The five-year Compact will help strengthen access to and quality of Namibia’s education and training sector, increase productivity of farm enterprises in communal rural areas and promote growth in Namibia’s tourism industry. What a delight it is to be here tonight to celebrate the signing of the Millennium Challenge Account Compact with Namibia. This US $304 million poverty reduction grant is an investment in the people of Namibia. Congratulations to everyone who worked so hard to make this signing a reality.
The American people have a steadfast commitment to the development of Africa, where despite incredibly acute challenges, we see a continent of enormous promise, increasingly willing to tackle its own challenges to create a better life for Africans everywhere. And, the United States government is dedicated to supporting leaders and citizens in developing countries who are working to create new possibilities for themselves. [read more]
